Chapter Seven

“Hey, little brother.” Jared walked through the front door to see Derek curled up on the couch, the remote in one hand and a halfdrained Slurpee in the other. “I thought you would be asleep a long time ago. Or at least crashed out in bed with Cody, watching TV in your room.”

“Cody’s at his mom’s tonight,” Jared answered, not moving a muscle. “Bonding time, or something like that. He’s spending the night, so it’s the perfect time to catch up on The Vampire Diaries. It’s not his favorite, but I love it.”

Grant smiled, swatting at Derek’s feet signaling him to make room on the couch. “Mind some company?” He sat, not waiting for a response, just missing Derek’s feet.

Hitting pause, Derek turned to look at his brother. He took a long sip from the Slurpee and then let out a burp. “Where have you been? Hot date?”

“How did you guess?” “You never were the one to be without company for too terribly long.”

“You have me confused with say…you.”

“Funny.” Jared took another sip, noisily. “I can tell by the way your left cheek is doing that funny thing it does when you’re into a guy.”

Jared touched his cheek. “What are you talking about? What funny thing?”

“That,” Derek said, pointing with his straw, a few drops falling onto his lap. “It kind of creases and quivers, like a facial seizure or tick or something. Strange.”

Jared willed his facial muscles to relax. “I don’t know about that, but you are right about the guy. I am definitely into him. He’s smart, handsome. Has a job.”

“Those are all good things, but I sense that there is trouble in paradise.”

“How can you tell? And don’t try to pass that psychic crap off on me like you did that summer when you were convinced that you saw the ghost of Cal Ripken.”

“I did,” Derek scoffed.

“Cal wasn’t dead then, and he still isn’t dead.”

Laughing, Derek pointed at Jared’s cheek, but the right one this time. “When you’re nervous, that cheek creases and quivers, too. You know, you really are a mess, fretting or falling in love.”

“Stop it.” Jared swatted at his brother’s leg. “And no one said anything about falling in love. I just met the guy.”

“How did you meet him, exactly? Internet?” Derek guessed.

“He’s one of Pete’s clients, or at least his wife is.”

“That’s it. Now I know why your right cheek is freaking out because you’re freaking out. Don’t let Pete find out you’re dating a client. You’ll get the ‘no dating clients’ speech,” Derek said, sitting upright and turning toward Jared. “I can’t believe you of all people are dating a married guy.”

“I’m not. He’s divorced. I cleaned his wife, Pamela’s, tile roof this afternoon, and he was there.”

“Either you or he is really smooth. I’m guessing it’s not you.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, and it was Grant that asked me out. I did feel a little uncomfortable accepting as his ex-wife and daughter potentially peered from the front window, but I got over it.
